When to Register

Registration dates for undergraduates students (Fall and Spring terms) are based on completed credit hours, which does not include hours that you are currently registered for.

Do not use the credit total shown in Degree Works.

• New Students

  New Student Orientation (NSO) is your first step to becoming part of the Bear community. Whether you’re just finishing high school or coming to UNC from another college, Orientation is designed to help you get prepared academically, socially, and personally.

  During Orientation, you’ll:

  • Get your UNC Student ID Card
  • Connect with campus resources and staff
  • Learn about financial aid, academics, and student life
  • Meet other new students

  How to Register for New Student Orientation

  Log in to your  and select your preferred Orientation session.

  You can update your session anytime through the portal. If your preferred date is full, we’re happy to help—just reach out.

  When Will I Register for Classes?

  • First-Time First-Year Students attending In-Person NSO:

  You will complete advising and registration during your Orientation session as part of the day’s schedule.

  • First-Time First-Year Students attending Virtual NSO:

  Advising and registration will begin starting the first week of July. You’ll receive detailed instructions via email with your next steps.

• New Transfer Students

  Transfer students bring valuable experience to UNC—and we’re here to help you transition smoothly. Orientation provides the tools, resources, and connections you need to get started with confidence.

  During Orientation, you’ll:

  • Learn about financial aid, academic support, and getting involved
  • Get your UNC Student ID Card
  • Meet other new students and staff
  • Explore what life at UNC has to offer

  When Will I Register for Classes?

  Transfer students can begin academic advising and course registration as early as the April for Fall Start (August) Students and November for Spring Start (January) Students, depending on your college. You’ll receive specific instructions via email with your next steps.
