A Q-and-A with Keith Humphrey

Get to know UNC's new Vice President of Student Affairs

Keith Humphrey, Ph.D., UNC’s new vice president for Student Affairs, joined the university over the summer.  He most recently served as vice president for Student Affairs at Cal Poly, in San Luis Obispo, California, and brings over 25 years of leadership in higher education and student affairs to UNC.  As he settles into his role on campus, he's answering a few questions to help the university community get to know him better.

Q: Why did you choose UNC?

A: I believe deeply that the purpose of higher education is to reduce the stratification that exists in society, and as an outsider, I could see this work happening vibrantly at UNC.  I wanted to be a part of that effort at this stage in my career as doing work that is meaningful and transformative for students, their families, and our communities is where I want to place my professional emphasis.

Q: Since arriving at UNC in May, what has your experience been like?

A: I am amazed at how welcoming and caring the people of UNC and Greeley are.  I have felt very welcomed and can see that same ethos being shared with our newest students over the summer at New Student Orientation.  I am glad our community shows up for each other this way.

Q: What do you want students to know about you?  About their experience?

A: I want students to know that I am their champion and here for them.  Students can always drop by my office in the University Center for help, especially during my weekly office hour on Mondays from 4-5pm.  I want students to know that we know that being a college student and balancing many priorities is difficult.  It’s ok to ask for help when you need it.  Asking for help at UNC is not a sign of weakness.  It’s knowing you need help and willfully choosing to not seek out help from such a caring community that is a sign of weakness.

Q: Your background includes unique features including serving as a faculty member in a graduate program at a previous institution and having served as President of an international higher education/student affairs association.  What do you see as one of the greatest challenges facing higher education and students today?

A: The value and purpose of higher education is being questioned at many levels, like it has never been questioned before.  I know that this instability can create unease, anxiety, and deep personal concern for many in our community – especially our students who may have not experienced issues like this before in their lives.  To me, moments like these help me clarify my values as a leader and what is important to me and only reinforce the work that we have done and will continue to do.  I know my fellow leaders at UNC feel the same way, and it is great to join a team that is so fiercely committed to what we do for students.

Vice President Humphrey’s office is located in the University Center, Room 2166.
