Please see below for a message to UNC faculty from Keith Humphrey, Ph.D., new vice president of Student Affairs.
Hello, faculty –
It is a great honor to join you in our shared goal of student success for every UNC student. As an outsider I could see a broad commitment to student success and those observations have been affirmed during my first weeks on campus. Thank you for creating and sustaining those conditions in our community.
I strongly believe that the role of Student Affairs and out-of-class learning is to support the classroom learning and educational mission of UNC. My goal is that the quality of the out-of-class experience matches the quality of the in-class experience you provide. To that end, my team and I are here to support you in your work with students so that you can remain focused on the student learning experience.
It's impossible to meet you all as part of my onboarding, so please forgive this impersonal group message. It’s not my normal style and I hope to connect personally over time. For now, I seek your input about the out-of-class student experience. What is going well from your perspective? What can be improved? How can Student Affairs improve support to faculty?
I genuinely want to hear your thoughts, so please feel free to email me. You can always call my cell phone at 805-602-6204 when you or a student needs support. I will get you to the right member of our team to help. Add me to the contacts in your phone – you never know when you will need to reach out!
In the coming months you can expect to hear more from me and my team about the ways we are working to enhance the out-of-class learning experience and opportunities for you to grow in your support of students. Please know you are always welcome at any events we are hosting for students. For now, I wish you a smooth start to the semester and look forward to connecting with you.
In community,
KBH, Ph.D.
